Best snuffle mats UK: what to look for before you buy

How to choose a snuffle mat in the UK: size, base, fleece depth, washing, durability and the dogs it suits. A buyer’s checklist, with no invented scores or prices.

There are a lot of snuffle mats on UK shelves and online marketplaces, and many look almost identical in photos. The differences that matter only show up once a dog has used one for a few weeks: does it slide about, does it survive the wash, do the strips stay put? This guide is a checklist of what to look for, so you can judge any listing for yourself.

We do not rank snuffle mats or publish scores, and we do not list prices because they change. We do mention a couple of well-known designs as examples.

First: is a snuffle mat right for your dog?

Snuffle mats suit dogs who love to sniff and forage, fast eaters of dry food, and dogs who give up on harder puzzles. They are a poor fit for dogs who chew or shred fabric, and for wet or raw diets. If you are not sure, try a free towel roll first. Our guide snuffle mats explained covers how to introduce one.

What to look for

1. Size for your dog

A mat should be big enough that your dog can stand or lie beside it and work through it without stepping off the edge. A large dog on a small mat tends to flip it or push it around. Check the dimensions in the listing rather than relying on photos, and compare them to your dog’s size.

2. A non-slip, solid base

On UK laminate and tiled kitchen floors, a mat without grip slides away from the dog. Look for a rubberised or non-slip backing. A firmer base also helps the mat lie flat, which matters for older or less steady dogs. The Trixie Snuffle Mat is an example of a design with a firmer base.

3. Fleece density and depth

Dense, longer strips give more places to hide food, so the game lasts longer. Very sparse mats are emptied in seconds. On the other hand, very deep mats can frustrate a beginner. Moderate depth is a sensible starting point, and you can always scatter food more shallowly to make it easier.

4. How the strips are attached

Strips that are knotted firmly through a base grid tend to stay put. Loosely glued or poorly tied strips can be pulled out — which becomes a swallowing risk. Look closely at product photos and reviews for comments about strips coming loose, and check the mat yourself before each use.

5. Washing

Food crumbs and dog slobber build up quickly in fleece. Check whether the mat is machine-washable and at what temperature, and how long it takes to dry. Mats that can go in the washing machine and dry on a radiator or airer overnight are much easier to live with.

6. Shape and features

  • Flat mats are simple and easy to wash.
  • Mats with pockets, flaps or “flowers” add extra hiding places for more experienced dogs.
  • Foldable mats with a drawstring or popper can be rolled into a ball for a harder version.
  • Snuffle balls and toys are smaller and portable, but are more like a toy than a feeding mat.

The Paw5 Wooly is a well-known flat, fleece design that many UK owners start with.

7. Materials and smell

Polar fleece is common and washes well. Some cheaper mats can have a strong chemical smell when new, so wash before first use if the maker allows it.

Red flags in a listing

  • No dimensions, or only “one size”.
  • No washing instructions.
  • Medical or behaviour claims, such as a mat “curing” fear or fixing problem behaviour. A snuffle mat is a food game.
  • Photos that look identical to many other listings with very different descriptions. Read the details carefully.

Making it last

  • Always supervise, and pick the mat up when the food is gone.
  • Shake out crumbs after each use and wash regularly.
  • Let it dry completely before the next use.
  • Retire the mat when strips start coming loose or the base starts to tear.
